When the Grid Fails, Care Continues

How Clínica San Erasmo built energy resilience to protect patients and critical medical services.

Introduction

Clínica San Erasmo is located in Upala, a town in the Alajuela province of northern Costa Rica, where access to dependable healthcare is essential for the surrounding rural communities. Unlike large hospitals in the capital, this clinic plays a deeply personal role in daily life — serving as a first point of care for families, workers, and elderly residents across the region.

As the clinic continued to grow, plans were made to construct a new operating room, expanding its ability to provide surgical care locally. With that expansion came a critical requirement: reliable electricity.

Memories of Hurricane Otto in 2016 were still vivid. When the storm hit northern Costa Rica, widespread power outages left communities without electricity for days. For medical facilities like Clínica San Erasmo, the loss of power was more than an inconvenience — it was a direct risk to patient safety.

That experience stayed with the clinic's owner, Dr. Aldhen García, and shaped a clear priority for the future: the clinic needed an energy system it could depend on, even when the grid could not.cía, to seek a solution that would provide peace of mind and security.

The Challenge

Operating rooms demand absolute reliability. Even a brief power interruption can compromise patient safety, disrupt surgical procedures, and place enormous pressure on medical staff.

Dr. García was not looking for a temporary backup or a basic generator solution. The goal was a self-sufficient energy system that could operate safely, withstand extreme weather, and provide long-term confidence for both staff and patients.

The battery system needed to deliver:

i:Sufficient storage capacity to support critical medical equipment

ii:High safety standards and strong fire protection

iii:Long-term durability in a hot, humid, and storm-prone environment

iiii:Seamless compatibility with the clinic’s solar energy system

Above all, the solution had to be something the medical team could trust — day after day, year after year.

Why Pytes

After evaluating several options, the clinic selected the Pytes V12 battery as the foundation of its energy storage system.

The decision was driven by a balance of safety, durability, and real-world practicality:

i)Safety: IP66-rated enclosure, integrated fire extinguishing system, and built-in pre-charge functionality

ii)Durability: Rated for 8,000 life cycles and supported by a 10-year warranty

iii)Efficiency: High energy density in a compact, lightweight design

iiii)Compatibility: Proven integration with the clinic's Sol-Ark solar inverter system

For Dr. García, the choice was about more than specifications. It was about confidence — knowing the system would perform reliably when it mattered most.

The System Configuration:

A complete solar-plus-storage system was installed to support the clinic's operations, including the new operating room:

i:2 × Sol-Ark 9 kW inverters (18 kW total)

ii:4 × Pytes V12 batteries (47.2 kWh total capacity)

iii:22 kWp of solar panels

Together, the system provides stable, uninterrupted power during grid outages while reducing reliance on utility electricity during normal operation.

The Outcome

With the new energy system in place, patient safety remains protected even during power disruptions. The operating room can function without interruption, and medical staff no longer need to worry about sudden outages during critical procedures.

The benefits extend beyond emergency preparedness:

i)Reliable, uninterrupted power for surgical and clinical operations

ii)Greater peace of mind for patients, doctors, and staff

iii)Reduced electricity costs through solar generation and storage

iiii)A long-term commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility

Today, Clínica San Erasmo stands better prepared for the future — resilient against storms, independent from grid instability, and focused on what matters most: providing high-quality medical care to its community.

For Dr. García and his team, reliable energy is no longer a concern. It is simply there — quietly supporting every procedure, every patient, every day.
