Selection and use precautions of RV lithium battery

The necessity of using a lithium battery in an RV

When traveling in a RV, the biggest problem is water and electricity. The problem of water is relatively easy to solve. Finding water is not so troublesome. The more troublesome thing is the supplement of electricity. Some people say that when traveling in an RV, isn’t it equipped with a portable generator to have electricity at any time? The more troublesome thing about the generator is the noise. It is estimated that it is okay to use the generator during the day, but at night, if the generator is still used for power supply, it will be relatively noisy. Also, it is troublesome to use the generator. Every time you use it, you have to lift it up and down, and you need to connect it, and you need to keep it a little farther away to reduce the noise. If the RV is equipped with a certain amount of lithium batteries, it will be relatively better. With lithium battery and inverter, there is almost no sound, and it feels the same as at home.

How much capacity lithium battery is suitable for RV

The capacity of the battery for the RV mainly depends on the total power consumption of the RV. Generally, there are rice cookers, electric water heaters (boiling water), lights, TVs, audio equipment, etc. in RVs, and some RVs are also equipped with air conditioners. Generally, the recommended battery capacity for RVs without air-conditioning is 400ah. For RVs with air-conditioning, it is recommended that the battery capacity is not less than 400ah, and generally 600ah-800ah is better. The above battery capacity is for the battery pack voltage of 12V.

Selection and Identification of RV Lithium Batteries

The lithium batteries we often say include ternary lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries. The advantages of ternary lithium batteries are that they have high power density and are currently cheaper than iron phosphate. But the ternary lithium battery has two problems. One is that the power decays quickly, and it will drop by 30%-50% in about three years. The mobile phone battery we use is like this. After about three years, the mobile phone battery has to be replaced, otherwise the mobile phone is used for daily use. , I can't hold on for a day. Second, the safety of ternary lithium batteries is not as good as that of lithium iron phosphate batteries. Under collision, external force, and puncture, ternary lithium batteries are prone to fire and explosion, while lithium iron phosphate batteries do not have this problem.

If you use an iron phosphate battery, how do you know if the battery is good or not? There is a simple method, which is the electric density identification method. It is the battery with the same capacity, whichever is lighter, the lighter one is better, the heavier the worse, the second-hand battery is also possible, or the battery itself is a poor quality battery. At present, the power density of good quality lithium iron phosphate batteries can be more than 130, generally around 100.

Precautions for the use of RV lithium batteries

1. When the battery is not used for a long time, be sure to turn off all power sources on the RV and check whether the battery still has discharge current! If all electrical appliances are not turned off, even a small power can drain the battery power. Although the battery has a built-in over-discharge protection function, long-term zero power storage will seriously affect the battery life.

Suggestion: Before parking and storing, carefully check whether the power is off, and charge the battery every three months.

2. If the battery has abnormal smell, abnormal sound, smoke, or even fire, all personnel should leave the scene as soon as they notice it, and call the insurance company immediately.

3. Battery storage:

The environment for storing lithium batteries should be kept dry. It is not allowed to place the battery in a place where water may leak, such as on the ground, etc., to avoid short circuit of the battery pack caused by water leakage from the heater and rainy windows.

The battery pack should be kept away from flammable, flammable and explosive products, and new and old batteries should be stored separately.

A Class D fire extinguisher and respirator should be available at the battery pack storage location.
